Each of these DVDs is around 1 hour long. They feature John Burke sensei and a guest or two having the moves from the kata demonstrated on them.
The teaching is done at "learning speed" - and is not shown at full speed and power to protect the person being demonstrated on. You can't show an arm-break at full speed and power to it's logical conclusion. You can show an effect that leads you to believe that with greater force there would be a more harmful effect.
The attacks demonstrated are all "realistic" types of attack - not the kind that a martial artist would throw, but rather that of an untrained thug. That, after all, is what we have to contend with for self defence.
The applications are shown to be joint-locks, throws, and strikes to anatomically vulnerable areas of the body at a distance that can actually cause harm.
Buy them with confidence. There aren't flashy graphics or super camerawork, just good solid applications.

Heian Yondan, also known as Pinan Yondan is a karate kata used for grading and training purposes. What many people don't know is that the moves are used against hook punches and bear hugs and the like, rather than against the techniques of another martial artist. The techniques of the kata are self defence applications that manipulate an opponent's balance, their joints, and strike to anaotmically vulnerable areas.
In this video, about an hour long, John Burke sensei shows you how.

New for July 2014
In this video, lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes, John Burke sensei takes a look at the kata Sanchin and the kata Tensho.
These fundamental mainstays of Naha-te Karate lineages like Goju Ryu and Uechi Ryu are widely practiced as breathing exercises and body development forms. Some even go so far as to say "there are no applications" to them.
Of course, the movements are found in other kata. Kata that are considered "fighting kata" or "complete styles" in their own right. So here, assisted by Ross Chesterton sensei, the moves are shown with practical self defence in mind.
Sanchin & Tensho - pairing where the yin & yang of the martial arts, hardness and softness, flow and tension, are found in an ever-changing tide of balance and imbalance.

Tuite in Tekki
The "Iron Horseman" kata and it's Naihanchi parent can have many different applications. For this hour long video we have focused on the limb-twisting, locking, potentially devasting bunkai derived from the Chin-na/Tuite/Torite lens.
We have to be honest here. It's not really practical for most people to learn bunkai by post. In truth you should train and get your bunkai directly from a teacher.
For those of us to far from John Burke sensei to train with him regularly Books and DVDs are the next best thing.
Certain Alpha personalities have it in them to take what's on offer and add it to what they already do without hands on correction. There will always be those who can self-correct. If that's you then Great! If it's not you then please feel free to email info@Bunkai.co.uk with any questions that arise from watching our DVDs and reading the books.
We'll help if we possibly can.
